# When the president and governors are sworn in

The president is sworn in on January 5, 2027, and governors are sworn in on January 6, 2027. The rule comes from Constitutional Amendment 111/2021, which fixed these dates starting in 2027. Swearing-in comes after the elected candidates are certified in December 2026.

## What is the date of the president's swearing-in?

The swearing-in of the President of the Republic is set for January 5, 2027. From that day, the term begins for whoever is elected president in the 2026 vote.

In the first round, Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) received 47.03% of the valid votes and Lula (PT) got 45.16%, and the two advance to the runoff on October 25, 2026. The swearing-in date is the same for whoever wins in the first round or in the runoff, because the rule fixes the day of the swearing-in, not the round of victory.

## When are the governors sworn in?

Elected governors are sworn in on January 6, 2027, one day after the presidential swearing-in. The date applies to governors of the states and of the Federal District.

In the six states with a runoff for governor, which are Acre, Amazonas, Federal District, Espírito Santo, Rio Grande do Norte and Tocantins, whoever wins on October 25 is sworn in on this same date. In the rest, governors elected in the first round follow the same rule.

## Who takes office together with the president?

The president and vice president are elected on the same ticket, so a vote for the presidential candidate also elects the vice president. For that reason, the vice president takes office together with the president-elect.

## When does the term of federal deputies and senators begin?

Federal deputies and senators begin the new legislature on February 1, 2027, under Article 57 of the Federal Constitution. This date is different from the swearing-in of the president and governors.

## What comes before the swearing-in?

Before the swearing-in, the result is proclaimed by the Electoral Justice system, and the elected candidates receive their certificates of election in the certification, which takes place in December 2026. The certification dates follow the TSE's calendar and have no fixed day on this site.

The 2026 vote had its first round on October 4 and has its runoff on October 25. After the votes are totaled, come the proclamation, the certification and, finally, the swearing-in. This order applies to the president and to the governors.

Between certification and swearing-in, the winner follows the TSE's official stages. The 2026 results remain available on Brazil Election 2026, with the figures published by the TSE.
