When a result is mathematically settled
A result is mathematically settled when the votes still left to count can no longer change the winner. In the first round for president or governor, that happens when a candidate has more valid votes than all other candidates combined. In a runoff, the race is settled once the gap is larger than the votes remaining.

What does it mean to be mathematically settled?
A result is settled when the votes still to be counted can no longer change the winner, no matter how they are distributed. The math considers only valid votes, since blank and null votes do not count for any candidate.
Before that point, the reading is partial. A candidate may lead with part of the ballot boxes added up and still be overtaken by the remaining votes. For that reason, leading in a partial count is not enough to say the race is over.
How does it work in the first round for president and governor?
To be elected in the first round, a candidate needs more than half of the valid votes. In practice, the candidate is settled as the winner when they have more votes than all other candidates combined, including the votes not yet counted. At that point, no distribution of the remaining votes changes the result.
If no candidate reaches that mark, the two most-voted candidates contest a runoff. For that reason, the first-round outcome depends on the total of all candidates, not only on who is ahead in a partial count.
This rule does not depend on polls or expectations. It uses only the votes already tallied and the number of votes still to come, which makes the math verifiable by anyone.
And in the runoff?
In the runoff, there are only two candidates, and whoever has more valid votes wins. The race is settled when the gap between them is larger than the number of votes still to be counted, because no remaining vote can reverse the order.
While the gap is smaller than the remaining votes, the election can still change. Brazil Election 2026 records when the race is called on the national panel and in the updates feed, always based on the TSE's official total.
When the gap is large and few polling stations remain, the outcome tends to be settled earlier. When the gap is small and many polling stations remain, the wait is longer.
| Scenario | Situation |
|---|---|
| First round, president or governor | Elected with more valid votes than all other candidates combined |
| Runoff | The gap between the two is larger than the votes still to be counted |
| No majority in the first round | Goes to a runoff between the two most-voted candidates |
Why can the math change until the end?
The calculation depends on how many votes are still to be counted, and that number falls with each batch added. A gap that looks large in a partial count can shrink if many polling stations remain, so the reading should always take into account the share of polling stations counted.
With 100% of polling stations counted, there are no more votes to count, and the result is the total for the election. Any appeals follow a separate path, described on the TSE portal at https://www.tse.jus.br.
For that reason, anyone following the count should read the sentence about the race together with the percentage of polling stations counted, not only the current lead. A single line from a partial count can mislead, so the reading should consider all the numbers together.

Frequently asked questions
Is the 2026 first-round presidential race already settled?
Yes, in the sense that the official total is at 100% of polling stations. No candidate passed 50% of the valid votes, so Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) and Lula (PT) contest the runoff on October 25.
If a candidate passes 50% in the first round, is there a runoff?
No. When a candidate passes 50% of the valid votes in the first round, they are elected and there is no runoff for that office.
Is there a single number of votes that settles a race?
No. Each race has its own math, which compares the gap between the candidates with the votes not yet added. The calculation changes with each batch added.
Where can I follow when a race is settled on the site?
The national panel and the updates feed of Brazil Election 2026 show when a race is settled, based on the TSE's official total.
Does leading in a partial count mean a candidate is elected?
No. Leading in a partial count does not guarantee victory. A race is only settled when the gap is larger than the votes still to be counted.
